 Ch 6

I placed Alex down as I watched the rest of the helicopters fly pass us. They were looking for us but couldn't find us. "Keep looking! They're around here somewhere!" I heard someone say.

I looked down at Alex. "Are you ok?"

"A bit fine," Alex murmured. I glanced at the wound Cross gave him. "What did he do?"

"I don't know but I feel weird," Alex said, twitching. "It's like....I don't know. I feel like I'm in pain. I can't open up any of my powers."

 "How bad?"

"Like I got hit in the face with a rock or something." He held onto his arm tightly, gritting his teeth. His arm pulsed, biting his lip and hissing as the pain increased.

"Should we go to Dana?" I asked.

"That would be great but can you carry me?"

I picked up his arm again and marched over to Dana's. His weight was a bit heavy for me.

"Geez, Alex," I said. "Ever thought about shedding down a few times?"

"Well, you would I think I shed a few with all this crap running through my body and all those moves we did," he growled. "I'm surprised he didn't get to you though. If he did though, I would tear him apart."

 "Who?"

 "Cross, of course!"

"I think I could of took him on. I mean, I had those shooting laser thingies on my hands. If anything, he would probably run away from me so he won't get infected." I laughed but then saw a scowl on Alex's face. Either he didn't have a sense of humor or the joke was really horrible. Or he was serious about it.

"It looks like your skills are growing," he said. "You seem to be running faster and getting some upgrades as well. I mean, how else did you get that shooting thing?"

"I don't know," I said. "Maybe we're limited to few powers? Like exclusives?"

 "Hmm," Alex said.

We arrived at Dana's apartment. I opened the door and saw Alex prepare himself. "What are you doing?" I asked.

"Look, if she sees I'm hurt or anything, she's going to flip. I'd rather be half decent than full crap," he growled. He then went in and I followed. Dana turned around to greet us.

"Whoa," she said, glancing at Alex. "Are you all right? You look like a train hit you."

"I'm fine," Alex said. "Anything new?"

"They're watching someone named Dr. Bradley Ragland in place of McMuller," Dana said. "He's at St. Paul's Hospital, running the morgue. If you find him, you'll find McMuller. He's good though so there's no need to well...fist fight or anything."

 "Thanks, Dana," I said.

"One more thing," Dana continued. "I was looking at the whole Hope, Iowa thing. It's army town that was wiped from the map. A lot of people got killed and only one survivor was found....this girl." She pointed to a photo of a group of girls.

 "Elizabeth Greene," Alex said.

"Not bad for the look," Dana said.

"Iowa was an experiment," Alex said.

 "What?" Dana asked.

"I killed people and acquire their memories," Alex said. "I hear their voices, seen what they done and..."

"What the hell?" Dana said, frowning.

I saw Alex getting frustrated and moving around. I stopped him. "It's true, Dana," I said. "When we....consume people, we get their memories and see their past. I'm not sure what we can do about it though. It's just a part of the virus I guess."

"Find Ragland. He'll get you to McMuller," Dana said.

I grabbed Alex and we began walking out.

It was hard getting to St. Paul's. Alex kept having to stop and whine about his arm hurting. "Gosh, why did it have to be here," he hissed, grasping it. He sat down.

I patted his back. "Alex, it's not your fault. It's Cross's. If anything, I would of token the stab for you."

"Better me, than you," Alex said. "Like I said, if he ever laid a hand on you, I would rip him apart and make him pay." I frowned and raised my eyebrows. Since when did he get...protective?

"I'm fine," I said. "Look, I'll get to Ragland. Maybe you need some rest. I'm good at blending into the crowd anyway. I promise I won't make any trouble. And if the soldiers suspect me, I'll just change into one of them and escape from there. I'll be back as soon as I can..."

"I'm going, I'm going," Alex said, sitting up. "It's not that I don't believe you. It's just that...I guess I feel like you're my responsibility and if you get hurt, it's my fault."

"Hey, I'm partially to blame too for you getting hurt," I snapped. "Are you sure you don't need some rest? I swear I can..."

"I'm fine, I'm fine!" Alex huffed, letting go of his arm. "I just might slow down a bit and get some breathers. I feel like crap."

I nodded. "Ok then...but if you start acting like a baby about your wound, then I'll have you find some resting place and you'll lay there...and I'll go on my owns. No buts or anything. Deal?"

 "Deal," he grumbled.

He sure did made sure he wouldn't recall any pain or whine about it. In fact, when I started running a bit across the rooftops, he made sure he was right by my side, catching up. Even when I jumped over to the next rooftop, I would find him right near me, clutching his arm but giving me a thumbs up.

I shook my head though. I understood what he meant but seriously, it was getting sort of annoying. It was like one of those things where you feel all grown to start doing your own things, only to find out your parents hired someone to keep an eye on you to make sure you weren't getting into any trouble. The nerve sometimes!

We made it to St. Paul's and went into the morgue.

"Dr. Ragland?" I called out. We found a dark skinned man examining a corpse.

"Not interested," the man said, scanning the corpse.

"We need help in eliminating the virus," Alex said. Dr. Ragland lifted his head up.

"Symptomatic," Alex said, doing a weird morph thing of red slime swirling around his body a bit. I tried to do the same...picturing the red slime swirling around my body...sadly no effect though.

"We won't hurt you," I said. "Doctor...we want to help. Think about it. Stopping this thing will save millions of lives." I know I was sort of going at odds here. I wanted to stop the virus but....I didn't want to give up my powers. Could I least have a bit more fun with them for a little while? Or maybe it was better to give them up....after all, Alex couldn't control any of them after what Cross did to him.

"Find me patient zero," Dr. Ragland said.

"Ok," I said, already darting out the door.

"Wait," Alex, trying to catch up.

"No," I said, pushing him back. "You'll stay and maybe defend Ragland. Who knows if even Blackwatch will be after him."

"I'm not letting you go alone," Alex said.

"I'm fine on my own," I hissed. "You're hurt. You need to be healed. Maybe Ragland can examine you a bit while I go and find patient zero. In fact, I'll go out and get all the stuff while you get some rest and Ragland can find something to calm you a bit."

Ragland crossed his arms and nodded. "She has a point," he said. "I mean, you do look like crap. No offense."

"None taken," Alex said. "(Y/n)...are you sure you're up for this? This isn't some kiddie thing you can play around with."

"Trust me, I'm fine," I growled. "If anything, I'm going to need to learn how to control my powers without you around. I mean, I feel pretty fine on my own.

"Last thing I need is you getting hurt," Alex hissed.

"And the last thing I need is you getting killed," I snapped. Alex rolled his eyes and then turned away.

Dr. Ragland glanced at us, surprised that I won the fight.

"Well, if you're going to go out alone, you need to find the spectors. Find the spectors, you'll find the bodies," Alex said.

"Ok," I said. "I'll be back as soon as I can." I then bolted out the door. I was surprised to hear though Dr. Ragland tap Alex's shoulder and ask, "Umm, what relation is she to you?"

I heard him mumble, "A friend." Yeah.

I walked across the city and began to do my job. It was crazy. I never knew it would be this hard. I went into the army stations to check for the location of the patients. Only it was hard since I'd never expected to seen those scanners beep about who I am.

Not to mention I had to...consume a person. The memories would be absorbed into my brain and I got all the information about where the patients where.

"Ok," I said. "Time to find someone."

I then jumped across roofs to where they had the patients. I spotted one of them out in the open.

"All righty," I said as I morphed into my solider form and went down. In a quick flash, I grabbed the body and took off.

"What is he doing with that body?" one of the soldiers said.

"INFECTED!" someone shouted. They began to fire their guns at me. I dodged each one and successfully ran back to Ragland's mortuary. Little did I realize there was a helicopter on my trail.

"We've got a female symbiotic on the run," I heard someone say like those police walkie-talkies. I felt a sting of pain as a missile aimed for my back.

"Whoa," I shouted as I felt myself leap into the air. I landed on the roof with a smack to the face. However though, I somehow flipped over to my feet again. I wobbled a bit as I tried to stand up. I got up and rubbed my nose. I turned around to see a solider aim his sniper at me.

"Oh no you don't!" I said as I jumped into the air and surprisingly held onto the solider.

"How did I do that?" I said.

"Let go of me!" the solider squealed. His buddy controlling the helicopter turned around and tried to reach for me. I kicked his friend off and dived off of the helicopter.

I began to run again and hid into an alley.

"I don't see her anywhere!" the soldier said. He made the helicopter go up higher and looked around.

I took off again with the patient's body, wondering if I was evolving more faster. I mean, if you were an Infected and especially being just infected, you wouldn't be able to first thing jump on a helicopter from high up and get onto it...would you?
